Herland (Winter Oasis), 2019

Collaboration by Kenzie Housego, Stacey Morgan, Sophie Amin, Kath Blair, GLOW Light Festival, downtown Calgary, Alberta.

Two covered geodesic domes, LEDs, proximity sensors, artificial plants and flowers, motors, Arduino Uno microcontrollers, 12' × 7' each.

Inside each dome, kitsch materials such as fake flowers, handmade foliage, rhinestones, and glitter reflect the natural world in an unnatural way. The artificiality of the space raises the question of mechanized fantasy over reality, and highlights how technology often mimics nature through an overly enhanced, attention-grabbing aesthetic.

As festival attendees moved around the domes, movement sensors trigger the interiors to bloom and change colour with glowing light, pulsing flora, and fauna.
